Botswana is at its best during the dry season between May and October, when you can expect warm, sunny days (22°C to 35°C). The nights can get rather chilly though, so remember to pack your fleece! This is also when the water levels in the Okavango Delta are at their highest, creating Botswana’s famous waterways and channels.
If you’re not bothered by the odd shower, then the green season — which runs from November to April — is also a great time to travel.
Botswana’s currency is the Pula, which means ‘rain’ in Setswana.
The British pound, US dollar, Euros, and the South African rand are the most easily convertible currencies, and major credit cards are accepted at hotels, lodges, shops, and restaurants. Some establishments do not accept payment by Diners or American Express.
ATMs accept foreign Visa cards but are mostly found in larger towns and cities. Cultural sites and community art and craft outlets are usually cash-only.
Major hotels have foreign exchange desks and most shops, lodges, and travel agencies accept travellers' cheques.
While on a Botswana safari, it’s customary to tip lodge staff and guides in either Pula or any hard currency. How much varies depending on the staff member’s role and the size of your group. In city restaurants and bars, a 10% tip is customary when a service charge is not included.
Your Botswana-based Love Travel Adventures tour leader can give you more detailed guidance on tipping etiquette.
Your safety is our priority at Love Travel Adventures, and we recommend you consult the up-to-date guidance provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) to help you make your personal travel decisions. For more information click here.
