South Africa at a glance

South Africa is an extraordinary mix of breathtaking landscapes, prolific wildlife, modern cities, and diverse cultures. Known as the rainbow nation, it’s home to a people whose recent past has changed global politics forever. Cross to Robben Island to get some deeper perspective on history, and then indulge yourself at a vineyard or two, spend some time on the beach, hike to the top of Table Mountain (and then get the cable car down — or vice-versa!), or maybe head inland to explore the imposing beauty of the rugged Drakensberg range. Add in some of Africa’s greatest safari destinations, and you have the makings of the perfect bucket-list adventure with a decent chance of spotting most — if not all — of the Big Five: African elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo. All our accommodation is 4* or 5* for the finishing luxurious touch.

Why we love South Africa

South Africa — the iconic rainbow nation — just makes us smile. You have the westernised city of Cape Town to explore, there’s the famous Table Mountain, and then there’s hands-on surfing at Roxy’s Surf Emporium at Muizenberg: it all simply takes your breath away! Evenings meanwhile feature plenty of amazing wining and dining in funky bars and restaurants. Come morning, why not try heading east on the scenic R62? We love taking in a vineyard or two, checking out the caves, and then swimming at the foot of a waterfall in the Tsitsikamma National Park. You can do this either way around, but we love to finish off our South African trips at a deluxe safari getaway. Sundowners surrounded by giraffes and abundant nature, anyone? We can’t recommend this highly enough. The guides, drivers, and other tour professionals we’ve met on our own travels now deliver the same top-level service to Love Travel Adventure’s South Africa clients. We guarantee you too will forge friendships that will last a lifetime.

The best time to visit South Africa on safari is from May to October as the cooler winter months in the southern hemisphere bring superb conditions for viewing big game. It can be rainy from November to February, but this is the best time to travel for birding, and temperatures remain warm at around 22°C. January is the hottest month in South Africa — temperatures can regularly go up to 32°C. But despite tropical rainfall, this is one of the best months to visit South Africa’s beaches and experience the incredible sunsets.

The South African rand (ZAR) is the official currency of the Republic of South Africa.

International credit cards and debit cards will work in ATMs and shops, hotels, and restaurants as long as they have a four-digit PIN encoded. Some — particularly Amex and Diners — may not be accepted, so check with your bank before you leave home.

Foreign currency can easily be exchanged at the kiosks, bureaux de change, and banks found at international airports and in most city centres.

We often get asked about tipping — who, when, where, how much. Here’s our guidance, based on our own experience.

At the airport: Only use baggage assistants in uniform (normally orange overalls). They have a fixed rate of R10 per bag and a sign of US$2 fixed to their carts.

On safari: Your guide will be one of the most important people involved in making sure your holiday is a success. You may therefore want to tip them separately to ensure that they get the recognition they deserve. A good tip indication is an average of R125-240 (approx £6-£11) per person per day. For a tracker, look at R60-125 (£2.50-£6). If you’re just joining a morning or afternoon excursion, then we recommend half of the above sums to the tracker and guide. If you have a private guide for a full day, then we would suggest a tip of R200-300 (£8.50-£12.50) per guest per day.

Most safari lodges also have a general staff gratuity box (for waiters, chambermaids, etc) and R50-150 (£2-£6.50) per guest per day is a suggested tip guideline.

At your city or town hotel: Tip porters generally around R20 (85p) per bag. Doormen can be tipped about the same, if they perform a service such as sourcing a cab. R20 is pretty handy as a general tip and is safe to fall back on if in doubt.

Day tours: For a full-day tour, we suggest R100 (£4.50) per person.

Restaurants: A 10% tip is acceptable for good service, or more if you consider the service to have been exceptional. It’s unusual for a service charge to be added to the bill.

Bars: Tips are the exception rather than the rule. Loose change from the cost of your drink is generally acceptable.

Petrol stations: Petrol stations in South Africa have attendants who will fill your tank and wash your windscreen. A tip of about R5 (20p) is welcomed.

Your safety is our priority at Love Travel Adventures, and we recommend you consult the up-to-date guidance provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) to help you make your personal travel decisions. For more information click here.
