India is a year-round destination, but December to March is considered the best time to visit thanks to cooler, drier weather — perfect for sightseeing across the Golden Triangle, exploring ancient temples, or relaxing on southern beaches. The shoulder seasons of October–November and April also offer great travel windows, with fewer crowds, warm temperatures, and festive highlights like Diwali in the autumn. If you’re looking to escape the chill at home or dive into India’s vibrant cultural calendar, these are ideal months to travel.

From June to September, the monsoon season transforms much of India into a lush, green landscape — ideal if you’re after fewer tourists and a slower, scenic experience. Wildlife lovers will find April to June particularly rewarding in Rajasthan’s parks. If you’re heading to the Himalayas, aim for March to June or September to November, while Kerala and the south shine between November and March. One note: Delhi can experience winter smog between November and January, so it's worth checking air quality if you're planning to explore the capital.

If you’re not bothered by the odd shower, then the green season — which runs from November to April — is also a great time to travel.

India’s official currency is the Indian Rupee (INR), symbolised as ₹. You’ll mostly use banknotes — ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200, and ₹500 are the most common — while coins (₹1, ₹2, ₹5, and ₹10) are handy for small purchases. Although ₹2,000 notes still circulate, they’re being phased out and are best avoided. For reference, £1 is roughly ₹117, though exchange rates can vary, so it's worth checking just before you travel.

Cash is widely used, especially in markets, smaller towns, or with local guides. You’ll also find ATMs in all major cities, and card payments are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops. Contactless and mobile payments (like UPI apps) are increasingly common, though you’ll need an Indian bank account to use them. We recommend bringing some GBP or USD and exchanging it at the airport or a reputable exchange bureau — just enough for tips and smaller purchases as you settle in.

Your safety is our priority at Love Travel Adventures, and we recommend you consult the up-to-date guidance provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) to help you make your personal travel decisions.  For more information click here
