Why we love Sri Lanka

We fell in love with Sri Lanka from the moment we first landed. It’s a country of simply amazing contrasts that leaves you feeling just a little humbled. Where else can you experience such unbounded natural beauty? Follow the richness of the rainforest with a switch in tempo to immerse yourself in the city hustle and bustle as you jump aboard a tuk-tuk? So much to do, so many places to visit — among our Love Travel Adventures favourites is the ancient fortress at Sigiriya Rock — and the food is simply out of this world! When we’re ready to relax, you’ll find us sampling some amazing dahl as we enjoy a beer or glass of wine at our beach hotel.

We honestly can’t recommend Sri Lanka highly enough — we love the diversity, we love the people, and we love working with some of the country’s very best ground operators to ensure you get the experience of a lifetime in this corner of south Asian paradise.

Avoiding the rain altogether can be a challenge, as Sri Lanka experiences more than one monsoon season. But even during the wetter months, there’s still ample sunshine between short, sharp rainstorms, and conditions change quickly. Peak season is between December and April, and you’ll find the island at its driest in between monsoon peaks from mid-March through April, and in August and September. The north-west gets the lowest annual rainfall with around 1,250mm, while the south-west highlands can record up to 5,000mm.

Average temperatures range from around 15°C in the mountains to about 30°C on the north-east coast. In coastal areas, they vary very little across the year: average temperatures in Colombo are between 27°C and 29°C all year. Inland there’s more variation — Kandy sees temperatures ranging from 17°C to 31°C — and it generally gets cooler the higher you go, with Nuwara Eliya recording minimum and maximums of 14°C and 21°C. Sri Lanka’s true hot spots are in the north and north-east, occasionally nudging almost 40°C.

Sri Lanka’s official — and only — currency is the rupee (LKR). The Sri Lankan government keeps a tight control on the national currency and there are strict limits on how many rupees you can bring in and out of the country, currently up to LKR 5,000 (about £15). There are five coin denominations — Rs10, Rs5, Rs2 and Rs1 — and six banknote denominations. These are ₨20, ₨50, ₨100, ₨500, ₨1,000, and ₨5,000.

ATMs are available in cities and large towns throughout Sri Lanka. Cash — including sterling (English notes only), US dollars, and Euros — can be exchanged in any bank or bureau de change. We recommend you change foreign currency at the airport. Credit cards are accepted at most midrange and all top-end hotels and restaurants, with Mastercard and Visa being the most commonly accepted. You’ll need to pay with Sri Lankan rupees in more remote or rural areas.

Out and about shopping — unless the price is fixed — you are expected to bargain, and at Love Travel Adventures, we love a good haggle! Generally, the initial price is halved, but please remember you may be arguing over pennies.

Tipping is generally expected in Sri Lanka, but how much you leave depends very much on the context. Restaurants will usually expect around 10% on top of the bill, regardless of what taxes and charges have been added on. If you have hired a private driver or tour guide for the day, then a tip of around £4-£8 per day is a good way of showing your appreciation if their service has been up to scratch. Taxi and tuk-tuk drivers won’t be expecting a tip but rounding up the fare by leaving some small change is always welcome.

Your safety is our priority at Love Travel Adventures, and we recommend you consult the up-to-date guidance provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) to help you make your personal travel decisions.  For more information click here
